Abandoned, 82-yr-old ends life at old-age home in Guduvanchery

Dejected over his children not willing to provide him shelter, an 82-year-old man from Chennai hanged self in his room in Guduvanchery on Saturday.

The deceased, identified as Thanikasalam of Kodungaiyur in Chennai, was a retired government employee. Police said Thanikasalam has a son and four daughters and all of them were married but none of his children was interested in taking care of their father and willing to allow him to stay with them.

Following that his son Venkatesh decided to send Thanikasalam to an old-age home in Guduvanchery. On Thursday, he took his father to the old-age home and made all the formalities for his stay there. Police said he had paid some extra money and arranged a separate room for Thanikasalam.

A dejected Thanikasalam, however, did not speak to anyone at the old-age home. On Saturday, Thanikasalam did not open the door till evening and there was no response for the knocks. Soon, Guduvanchery police visited the spot and broke open the door only to Thanikasalam hanging from the ceiling using his bedsheet. The body was retrieved and sent for post-mortem to the Chengalpattu government hospital. The police have registered a case.
