TASMAC should never have been shut, online sales is the way forward: Karti Chidambaram

Karti Chidambaram recently came up with another tweet, contradicting the stand of Tamil Nadu Congress Committee, and charging that the government decision of closing the TASMAC during the lockdown was a completely wrong decision.

TASMAC shops were closed in the Greater Chennai limits from March 24, after the Government had announced a lockdown in order to curb the pandemic situation. However, on May 7, the government allowed opening liquor shops situated outside the limit of Greater Chennai Corporation.

Following the success in containing the number of COVID-19 positive cases in Chennai, the Tamil Nadu government, on Sunday had announced that Tasmac shops situated within the limits of Greater Chennai will be opened from August 18.

Though the move to close down the liquor shops during lockdown was appreciated by various political leaders and public, MP Karti Chidambaram deferred. Contradicting the stand of Tamil Nadu Congress Committee, the party's MP from Sivaganga, Karti Chidambaram charged that the government's decision of closing the TASMAC during the lockdown was completely wrong.

The Congress MP had said, "It is a completely wrong decision to close the TASMAC for 45 days. The government should have opened the TASMAC stores for at least 2 hours everyday and promoted online sales. Failing to do so only led to huge crowds in the TASMAC stores after reopening and resulted in High court ordering its closure."

Earlier Karti also opined that the total prohibition of alcohol is never possible and would only bring mafia back to fore if that happens.

Recently, Karti Chidambaram had again tweeted his stand on opening the TASMAC. In a reply to a tweet, Karti had said, " Should have never been shut. Regulated hours with online sales is the way forward". 

While the DMK and its ally Congress party is still against the opening of TASMAC, Karti' s recent tweet has raised the eyebrows of many.
