“All those visiting the liquor shops must compulsorily wear face masks and maintain social distancing,” the government release said, adding outlets located in containment zones and malls would not be opened.

The State government also announced that the shops will remain open between 10 am and 7 pm and liquor will be sold on a token basis. “Only 500 tokens will be issued per day for a shop and people coming to purchase liquor should wear face masks and follow social distancing norms,” said a State government press release issued on Sunday.

After lockdown was announced by the State government on March 24, liquor shops across the State were closed. However, on May 7, the government opened liquor shops situated outside the limit of Greater Chennai Corporation. Bars attached to liquor shops and hotels will remain closed.

Liquor outlets were not opened here in May in view of a relatively high number of COVID-19 cases during that period of time.
