While the rain lasted for over an hour, the water that drained from inside the airport inundated the Customs office. Since the officials were involved in checking the passengers who arrived from the US and Abu Dhabi, the premises were in a chaotic state causing inconvenience to the passengers as well.
Meanwhile, a domestic flight that reached Chennai from Kochi around 10 pm was made to hover around for more than an hour until the runway was cleared of inundation to avoid any untoward incident.
Despite all this, as many as 517 Indians stranded abroad reached Chennai by four special flights from Chicago, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Qatar over the night on Saturday. While 171 were from Qatar, 180 were from Sharjah and 70 passengers from Chicago. As many as 96 were from Abu Dhabi. They were quarantined in the city after the mandatory medical checkup.
