Goondas Act slapped against Karuppar Kottam Surendran
Owner and presenter of ‘Karuppar Kootam’ YouTube channel, Surendran has been charged under Goondas Act in a case involving public mischief, promoting enmity and insulting religion.

Surendran had anchored a video criticizing Kandha Sashti Kavasam. He uploaded an episode on his YouTube channel under the title “Aabasa Puranam Series — Kandha Sashti Kavacham — Kathakalatchebam”, in which ‘derogatory’ remarks against the Hindu deity were made.
The video post against the 'Kavacham' hymn, considered sacred and recited everyday by millions of Tamil Hindus seeking divine protection from Lord Muruga caused outrage and many people took to social media to register their protest and seek action.
The video went viral in the social media triggering uproar from BJP and various Hindu organisations across the State.
On a complaint from BJP Legal Wing Head RC Paul Kanakaraj and other Hindu outfits, the Chennai Central Crime Branch had registered a case under Sections 153, 153(A)(1)(a), 295(A), 505(1)(b) and 505(2) of IPC and arrested Surendran who is in judicial custody till July 30.
The office premises of Tamil YouTube channel ‘Karuppar Kootam’, which was in an eye of storm for releasing a video denigrating Kandha Sashti Kavasam was also sealed on July 19 . All videos from the channel has been removed by YouTube authorities.
Chennai Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mahesh Kumar instructed the police personnel to register this case under Goondas Act.
In another case Gopal, who similarly criticized the Islamic Prophet Muhammad, has also been arrested under the Goondas Act.
