    City police lose 4th officer to coronavirus

    A 55-year-old police sub-inspector attached to the Meenambakkam station, who was tested positive for coronavirus past month, died without responding to treatments on Tuesday. He is the fourth policeman to die of COVID-19 in the city so far.

    The deceased officer was a resident of Tambaram police quarters. Sources said P Gurumoorthy suffered a mild fever, cough and cold on June 25 and when tested, he was found positive for the virus. Soon Gurumoorthy was admitted to Omandur government hospital. While on treatment, the SI suffered breathing problems and his oxygen level went low. On Tuesday early morning, he died without responding to treatments. Gurumoorthy is survived by his wife and two children.

    Condoling the tragic death, Commissioner of Police Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal tweeted, "We lost another hero, SI Gurumurthy. He sacrificed his life at the altar of duty fighting coronavirus. We salute his supreme sacrifice."

    According to statistics from the Indian Police Foundation, so far, 132 personnel belonging to police and paramilitary forces have died across the country due to COVID.

    In Maharashtra alone, 74 police personnel died of the epidemic.

    Across the nation, 18,094 police personnel were infected by the virus and in Tamil Nadu, the number stood at 1,516 on Monday.
