    6,000 litres of spirit worth Rs 40 lakh seized

    Chengalpattu district police chased a truck carrying illicit liquor and seized 6,000 litres worth Rs 40 lakh being smuggled in 152 cans in Villupuram on Saturday night.

    Police personnel of Orathi police station, who were checking vehicles near Murungai, tried to stop a truck but since it sped past them gave it a chase. Two kilometres away, they found the truck parked near Nedungal Junction, but the two men in the van had fled the spot. On checking the vehicle, police found 152 cans of arrack and seized them.

    Police said the smugglers used a fake registration number on the truck and suspect the arrack might have been smuggled to prepare fake liquor. A case has been registered and investigation is on.

    750 liquor bottles seized

    Similarly, Chennai police seized more than 750 bottles of liquor from smugglers and hoarders in different parts of the city. Korukkupet police seized 490 bottles of liquor, being smuggled from Tiruvallur district into the city, in its jurisdiction around 11.30 pm on Saturday and arrested four persons identified as P Sethu (36), D Manoharan (34), S Karthik (26) and T Mohanraj (28) of Korukkupet. Investigation revealed the gang had plans to sell the liquor for a higher price in the city.

    In another incident, a special team of Anna Nagar police seized 288 liquor bottles hoarded in a house behind a Tasmac shop in Maduravoyal and arrested J Ram-esh (27) and B Dharman (37) of Alapakkam. Further probe is on.

    Meanwhile, Kotturpuram police arrested two persons for selling alternative liquor in Taramani. Based on a tip-off, police secured A Srinivasan of Sri Ram Nagar and seized two bottles of alternative liquor. Investigation revealed that he distilled fermented fruit juice using a pot and mixed it with a portion of liquor to sell them as alternative liquor. House owner R Vetrivel was also secured. They were arrested and released on station bail with a warning.
