According to the Corporation, as many as 80 potential sites have been identified for multi-level parking and the civic body has decided to take up the project at 38 locations in phase-1. “We have invited interested consultants to take up the preparation of the detailed feasibility report. The selected consultant will report the extent of land parcels, road width, existing traffic and parking situation,” an official said.

The project has been taken up following an announcement in the State Assembly in February and would be implemented under Smart City Mission. Most of the selected 38 locations are mostly located close to transport hubs. The plan is to create off-street parking space for 2 lakh four-wheelers and 2 lakh two-wheelers.

Meanwhile, civic body data shows that the metropolis has a traffic density of 2,093 vehicles per kilometre of road. “The parking facilities will have commercial spaces that would be rented out to earn revenue. Overall, the consultant should prepare a plan for the 38 locations to accommodate around 50,000 cars at once,” the official added. The detailed feasibility report would categorise the facility based on the requirement as above-ground facilities, below-ground facilities or partially above and below ground. Also, the report would categorise the type of technology to be used such as a conventional ramp, semi-automated mechanised parking or fully Automated mechanised parking.

Meanwhile, construction of a multi-level car parking in T Nagar has been stalled due to the non-availability of materials. This project is also being implemented under Smart City Mission.
