    No bail to man who claimed to have cure for COVID-19

    After Metropolitan Magistrate Court dismissed the bail petition of K Thiruthanikachelam (50), who claimed to have a cure for COVID-19, the principal sessions and district court here declined to release him on bail since the accused has been detained under the Goondas Act.

    According to the counsel for the petitioner, Thiruthanikachelam was falsely implicated in the case and considering the duration of the custody, he may be granted bail.

    The City Public Prosecutor submitted that the petitioner has been detained under the Goondas Act 14 of 1982. “Considering the fact that the petitioner was detained under the Goondas Act, this court is not inclined to grant bail,” said judge R Selvakumar.

    The accused was arrested on May 6 for the offences punishable under Section 188, 505(1)(b), 153A of IPC and Section 3 of Epidemic Disease Act and Section 54 of Disaster Management Act 2005.

    Earlier, while dismissing thebail petition of Thiruthanikachelam in the Metropolitan Magistrate Court, the Chief Judge had said that granting bail to the accused would embolden like-minded people.
