An official told DTNext that Kilpauk Deputy Commissioner Manoharan has been assigned to conduct inquiries with the police personnel involved in the incident as the place of assault comes under his jurisdiction.

The assault victim, head constable Venkateshwara Rao of Vepery police station, had stepped out for work from his quarters around 11 am when the alleged incident happened.

One of the accused police personnel is part of the Intelligence Section (IS), who is supposed to report if anything untoward happens in and around Pachaiyappa’s College, while the other is an orderly at a senior police official’s residence.

It is said that the two police personnel, along with a few others, attacked Venkateshwara Rao near Gate 1 of the TP Chatram quarters and it was his wife who shot the video. The head constable, who had to take treatment at Kilpauk Medical College, had submitted a complaint with Kilpauk Assistant Commissioner Raja, in which he stated that the duo was into selling liquor, which they smuggled from Periapalayam, inside the police quarters and he was attacked when he questioned it.

However, when contacted, the IS cop said the whole incident was staged and the argument was ‘a fallout’ as the constable had posted about a COVID victim in the quarters in the WhatsApp group for residents. When contacted, Assistant Commissioner Raja said a departmental inquiry is underway and disciplinary action will be initiated against whoever is found culpable.
