The police arrested Ekavalli (38), wife of the deceased Sekar, a daily wage worker, and their second daughter Nandini (18) of Vadapattinam village near Kalpakkam. Nandini was married but has been living with her parents after separating from her husband.

Officials said Sekar used to often quarrel with his wife for money. As he was not able to find any work during the lockdown, he began to quarrel every day asking for money. He also harboured the suspicion that Ekavalli was having an affair.

On Thursday morning, while Ekavalli and Nandini were in the kitchen, Sekar began to quarrel with his wife and attacked her. Nandini tried to stop Sekar but she couldn’t control him. Nandini then took a knife and stabbed him on the chest. Hearing his cries, the neighbours rushed to the house and took him to Koovathur Primary Health Centre where he died without responding to treatment.

The Koovathur police sent his body to Chengalpattu government hospital for post-mortem examination, and arrested Ekavalli and Nandini.
