For the last few days, Chennai has been recording highest number of cases. With 47 new ones on Monday and 28 on Sunday, the city now has 570 cases. This includes several health care professionals, media personnel and even policemen. Among the new cases, six are primary while others are contacts of existing positive cases of COVID-19 patients.

“There are a lot of reasons for increasing number of cases in Chennai; lockdown is also one of the reasons,” said N Babu, a member of the Tamil Nadu Expert Committee for COVID-19, which advises the CM on virus containment measures.

All 13 who tested positive in Ambattur today are from Padi Kuppam area and are contacts of a patient from the area.

“Chennai is a metropolitan city and the condition here is not similar to other districts in TN. There are other factors like humidity, businesses conducted and the population density. So, we should not go just by numbers,” said N Babu, who clarified that situation was not yet alarming.

As on Monday, 81 positive patients were discharged after being cured, taking the total number of discharged persons to 1,101 leaving only 809 active cases in the State.

Of the total number of persons testing positive, 1,312 are males and 625 are females. While about 1,600 cases are among the age group of 13-60, 226 cases are in the age group of 60 years and above, and 111 cases are in the age group below 12 years.
