Newly wed among 2 killed by lightning, one electrocuted

The sudden thunderstorm on Sunday morning claimed at least three lives in Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts. Two persons, including a newly wed man, were struck by lightning, while a man was electrocuted in Ennore.

A 25-year-old man, who got married only three weeks ago, died on Sunday after he was struck by lightning in Kancheepuram. The deceased, Karthik Bala of Kooram village, was into financing, said the police. The incident happened around 5.30 am when he was going for walk in the village. It suddenly started raining, and he was struck by a lightning that left him unconscious. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but was declared brought.

Karthik Bala got married in the first week of April in a simple manner at a temple due to the lockdown, and wanted to host a bigger function after the crisis is over. The Baluchetty Chathiram police have registered a case.

Similarly, a 60-year-old man was struck by lightning near Gummidipoondi in Tiruvallur district on Sunday morning. The deceased was identified as S Chandran of Madurai Thathaiyan Kandigai village.

Meanwhile in Ennore, Selvin (50) of Sathyavani Muthu Nagar, who was out to buy milk from Thazhankuppam in the wee hours, suffered electric shock when he stepped on water stagnating near the shop, as the snapped live wire was submerged in the water. After he was thrown off, the milk vendor, Madhavan (48), rushed to Selvin’s rescue and suffered a shock. The passers-by who saw this alerted the Tangedco office in Ennore. The police said Selvin died on the spot.
