Handkerchiefs will do as masks: Corpn

Chennai Corporation Commissioner G Prakash said the residents need not use surgical mass or N-95 masks. “They can use handmade double-layered cotton masks and reuse them by washing in warm water every day. However, persons who are in contact with sanitary workers, COVID-19 patients and contacts of the patients should not use the reusable cotton masks and handkerchiefs. They should wear masks recommended by doctors,” he added.

He also emphasised that family members should not use the masks used by other members and each should keep their masks separately.

A few days ago, the Chennai Corporation had issued an order mandating masks for the persons who are coming out to buy essential items. The civic body had warned of vehicle seizure and suspension of driving licence. On Wednesday, another order was issued imposing a penalty of Rs 100 against those roaming on streets without masks. 

Prakash also flagged off 25 vehicles donated by Ford India Motors under CSR initiative for COVID testing.
