According to Corporation data, civic body teams have only covered around 17 lakh households despite there being more than 20.70 lakh households across the city during its door-to-door survey. As on April 9, the civic body only covered 85 per cent of the households. The teams began the survey with 11,838 personnel as part of a monitoring plan for containment of the disease.

As per the survey, 1,973 cases with symptoms were identified, of which 540 cases came to the fore on April 9 alone. Of the total identified persons with symptoms, the civic body cured 1,312. The remaining 661 people are being continuously monitored. “However, all the identified persons with the symptoms will be kept under our watch for 14 days,” G Prakash, Chennai Corporation Commissioner, said.

On the other hand, social activists complain that civic workers are not conducting the survey effectively.

“Civic workers who had visited my house did not ask health-related questions, but only collected names. This is due to the civic body’s decision to employ sanitary workers to conduct the survey. There is a chance for some of the residents concealing their actual health condition,” GM Shankar, a resident of Madipakkam and an activist said. He also urged the civic body to provide thermal scanner devises to the door-to-door survey teams so that they could effectively identify persons with symptoms.
