Cops ready to combat COVID with new attire

On an average, three police personnel at each station will have the special attire and they will attend to distress calls from the public. They will also help the Health department trace those who broke the prescribes quarantine period.

City police came out with move just hours after the State government asked the police to help the health officials track down those who stepped out of their house despite being asked to be in home quarantine. The government had also warned such people that it would recommend cancellation of their passport.

When contacted, a senior police official refused to call it a special gear. “We got something for our own use. We don’t know if it is special or not. We are also not sure if it can protect us. We will be using it as a precautionary measure if policemen were forced to interact with the COVID-infected patients,” the officer noted.

The ‘protective gear’ include an all-body covering suit with head cap, gloves and a mask. At every station, one SI and two constables will be trained to handle suspected COVID patients by health officials.

Meanwhile, officials hope that the public would come forward and undergo necessary health checks than making the officials from health and police department track them down. As per government data, there are over 9,000 people home quarantined in the State.
