HR and CE Joint Commissioner gets two-year RI for demanding bribe
A special court for cases under Prevention of Corruption Act sentenced a joint commissioner of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment (HR and department for two years’ rigorous imprisonment (RI) for demanding Rs 2 lakh to make provision in the scheme for appointment of non-hereditary trustees for the Arulmigu Aganda Thandu Mariamman temple at Choolai.

His bench clerk was also sentenced to one year RI. According to the prosecution, joint commissioner D Sundaram demanded Rs two lakh from M Sekar to pass an order appointing a person belonging to Yadava community as Dharmagartha on June 24, 2009.
The following day, he reduced the amount to Rs 1.5 lakh and asked Sekar to bring Rs 50,000 as the first installment, and directed him to hand over the money to his bench clerk N Sivaraj.
Sekar approached the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, who in turn helped him to pay the first instalment of tainted money of Rs 50,000 to Sivaraj. Through this trap, the vigilance officials arrested him and charged the duo under various sections of Prevention of Corruption (PC) Act, 1988.
After the trial, Special Judge J Omprakash found Sundaram guilty for the offence under section 7, 13(2) r/w 12(1)(d) of PC Act, and Sivaraj under section 13(2) r/w12(1)(d) of the Act. The judge also imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 each.
