Quizzes test city popularity, pass with flying colours
Over the last few years, the city has been privy to more quiz competitions than other cultural student events. From sports to current affairs and even popular movie franchises, quiz-masters explain that the rise in interest has more to do with content and mass appeal.

“From college students to working professionals, there is a broad demographic of quizzers in the city. Educational and corporate quizzes are also quite popular. As a metro, there are more opportunities and chances for quizzes to be held, which has led to this rise,” said Surya Narayanan, co-founder of Catalyst Corps.
Quizzing across the country are popular in metros but are still finding footing in Tier-2 cities, he added. Unlike cities like Kolkata, which has more interest in trivia, Chennai remains fascinated with quizzes.
The reason for this is due to the broad appeal for both participants and audience members. “Quizzing is a skill agnostic activity. This means that someone need only look at the morning newspaper to be ready for the quiz. Anybody can participate, and this broad appeal is what attracts audiences too,” said Miraj Vora, quiz master and business head at QuizWorks.
With more schools encouraging quiz clubs and hosting inter-school quiz competitions, there is also a younger demographic of students taking to the activity, which Narayanan says is beneficial for the long-term growth of quizzing as a whole.
“There is a very competitive and growing quizzing scene in educational institutions in Chennai. More schools are also having quiz clubs, which translates later in life as an interest for knowledge acquisition and therefore ensures the longevity of quizzing,” said Vora.
The most popular genres for quizzes in the city, according to Narayanan, remain sports and entertainment, as most people are up-to-date in those subjects. “However, with more corporates entering the field, there are a lot more business quizzes being held in the city. Additionally, there is also a rise in Marvel-related quizzes due to the popularity of the Avengers franchise,” he said.
