    Underage driving: Class 12 boys die as bike rams truck

    A Class 12 student died on the spot and his classmate succumbed to injuries at a hospital after their bike rammed a stationary truck near Red Hills on Sunday morning.

    The deceased, Surendar (17) of Periayapalayam and Dhanush Balaji (17) of Sholavaram, were students of a private school in the locality. They were part of the organising team of an awareness marathon event organised by the school administration.


    After the event, the duo was returning home on a two-wheeler when they lost control and rammed a stationary truck at Edapalayam. While Surendar, who was riding the bike, died on the spot, passersby rushed Dhanush Balaji to a nearby private hospital for treatment. Dhanush died at the hospital in the evening.


    The Sholavaram police have registered a case and further investigation is on. The police said that the rider had no driving licence.


    The lorry driver is said to have absconded. The accident resulted in the traffic jam in the locality for a while.


    In another incident, an 80-year-old man, who suffered injuries after he was hit by a speeding two-wheeler on Wednesday evening, died without responding to treatment on Saturday night. The victim, Appanna of Keelkattalai, was going for walk when Sukumaran (20) of Tambaram hit him with his bike. Both suffered injuries and were admitted at a hospital. However, Appanna succumbed to injuries. The St Thomas Mount traffic investigation police are investigating the case.


    Similarly, a 43-year-old man who suffered injuries in an accident in Tiruvottiyur on February 15 died in the hospital. The deceased, Poonarajan Joseph, who runs a canteen at a private college on Anna Salai, was hit by a car while crossing road at Sathyamoorthy Nagar in Manali. He was admitted at a private hospital but died on Saturday. The police arrested one Mohan (73) of Ernavur, who drove the car.
