Pet dog guards Pocso accused, delays arrest

The police who went to arrest an accused booked under Pocso Act faced a unique deterrent on Sunday. They had to wait for several hours to arrest a man who had allegedly sexually assaulted his minor daughter in Villivakkam as his pet dog stood guarding him, stopping police personnel for a while.

According to police sources, the Villivakkam All Woman Police Station (AWPS) received a complaint from a woman stating that her husband sexually harassed their daughter. After completing the first round of investigation, Villivakkam AWPS inspector Uma Maheshwari went to his house to arrest him around 4 am on Sunday and faced the dilemma. The pet dog of the suspect prevented the police team from entering the house and arrest its master. Finally, with the help of Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services (TNFRS), the dog was caught and the suspect was arrested.


The police noted that the suspect’s mother initially told the police team that he was not home. However, the police found that he was on the first floor and tried to enter the house. But his dog kept barking and prevented the police personnel from going nearthe suspect.


Fearing that the dog may bite them, the police called the Villivakkam TNFRS personnel to remove the dog from the scene. A team lead by Villivakkam station fire officer P Mannar reached the spot quickly. It went to the neighbouring house and using the equipment used torescue dogs from wells toremove the pet from the scene, the police said.


Then the police team immediately went inside the house and took custody ofthe suspect.


In another case, the city police arrested a 68-year-old man for allegedly sexually assaulting a 4-year-old-girl several times in the past few weeks. The police arrested the senior citizen based on a complaint from the family of the victim. “The suspect is a neighbour of the victim and had been sexually assaulting the girl in Porur,” police said. The man was arrested under Pocso Act and remanded injudicial custody.
