However, alert railway staff turned off the power supply and alerted the Fire and Rescue Services. Fire personnel from Kondithope station rushed to the spot and climbed the gantry and rescued him by tying his hands to bring him down around 8 am.
He was identified as L Mynathuni (30) of Assam and police said he appeared to be mentally disturbed. “He climbed the gantry at the end of the first platform near the parcel office at the terminus,” said a police personnel. Though it is not clear why he is in Chennai, police said a few people have seen him loitering in and around Choolai.
After inquiry, police decided to admit him at the home for mentally-challenged on the Tondiarpet government hospital campus.
Because of the incident, the departures of three express trains were delayed. While Shatabdi Express to Coimbatore departed an hour beyond the scheduled time, the SBC double-deck train to Bengaluru was delayed by 40 minutes. The Jan Shatabdi Express to Vijaywada was delayed by 40 minutes.
