Mishaps fall by 11.8 per cent in 2019, drunk driving brings in Rs 29 cr

The number of accidents and fatalities linked to the road mishaps has come down in the year 2019, compared to that of year 2018. While the year 2018 had recorded a total of 7794 road accidents in Chennai city, the number has come down to around 6819 in the year 2019, police sources said. This is 11.8 per cent less accident in the year 2019 compared to the previous year.

Police also noted that the fine collected for drunken driving have reached new height during the 2019 with more than Rs.29.8 crore was collected as fine from people who were found driving their vehicles in intoxicated condition. A total of 48,336 drunken cases were booked in 2019 while the number of the same offence in the year 2018 was 41,024.


As far as fatalities on the road are concerned, there has been a slight decrease too. If the six deaths during the new year celebration linked rash driving are included, the total number of deaths stood at 1252 in the year 2019, while the number was 1297 in the year 2018.


Police officials also noted that as many as 1,30,559 licences were suspended because of traffic offences carried out by the licence holders in the year 2019.


The total amount of fine collected for various offences for the year stood at Rs. 34.45 crore compared to Rs.27.2 crore, showing a increase of 26 .6 per cent.


Police had registered a total of 30.23 lakh motor vehicle cases in the year 2019 which showed an increase of 23.5 per cent. They have registered as many as 12.80 lakh helmet cases compared to 4.61 lakh cases booked in the year 2018.
