Tipsy driver injures ACJ chairman, wife

Former journalist and academician Sashi Kumar and his wife Radhika were injured when a car driven by a man under influence of alcohol hit them during their morning walk. They are, however, out of danger.

Though the car driver escaped with the vehicle after the incident, the police tracked him down later. The incident happened on Sunday morning on Kasturi Ranga Road. The police said that the couple was hit from behind and they were admitted to a private hospital following the accident. “We are getting discharged today. We were walking and were hit from behind,” said Sashi Kumar (67), when this newspaper contacted him over the phone.


Currently, Sashi Kumar is the chairman of Asian College of Journalism in the city.


The police said that they have arrested one Manoj for drunken driving and causing accident. “He was arrested and remanded in judicial custody for causing the accident under the influence of alcohol on Kasturi Ranga Road on Sunday morning. Manoj was traced with the help of CCTV footage from the locality by traffic police and booked under IPC 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide),” a senior police official noted.

Whoever does any act with such intention or knowledge and under such circumstances that, if he by that act caused death, he would be guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to three years, or with fine, or with both; and, if hurt is caused to any personby such act, shall be punishedwith imprisonment of either descriptionfor a term which may extend to seven years, or with fine,or with both.
