PWD to build 20 women’s hostels across State
The Public Works Department (PWD) – Building wing is all geared up to build as many as 20 working women’s hostels in districts all over the State including Chennai and Tiruvallur. This is aimed to help women from economically weaker sections avail good accommodation.

“The project is set to be taken up with funds from the Social Welfare Department, which is already operating such hostels for working women in many districts in the State. The hostels in Perambalur, Tiruppur, Tirunelveli, Villupuram, and Vellore have already been built and handed over to the Social Welfare Department for administration. Each hostel can accommodate around 50 women and newly built hostels would be handed over soon,” said a senior PWD official.
The official said that Chennai was accorded with four hostels and the process of identifying the site for the purposes will start soon. Also, a sanction of Rs 1crore each has been made for setting up hostels at Coimbatore, Tiruchy, and Chengalpattu. The Social Welfare Department is already running hostels in Dharmapuri, Thoothukudi, Cuddalore, Chennai, and Madurai.
“Women who earn from Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000 per month in the city and Rs 15,000 in other districts are eligible for admissions in these hostels. In Tiruvallur, Rs 200 is charged as monthly rent while it is Rs 300 in Chennai. The buildings would have a minimum of 22 rooms and a dormitory,” saidthe official.
