No filter: VJ Pooja returns to Tamil television with crime web series

Pooja Ramachandran, who entered our collective consciousness as a VJ on SS Music, and years later as a successful actress with films in several languages to her credit, returns to the Tamil audiences after four years. Video streaming platform Zee5’s latest offering, Police Diary, featuring an ensemble cast is based on true crime events, fictionalised and dramatised for the audience.

“As our characters discuss potential crimes and solve one every week, the audience can get their entertainment fix, while also learning a little. The platform has released a complete season of a show for the audience to binge watch this show. They are trying a new format by releasing an episode every week," says Pooja.

She tells me that she enjoys playing a tough woman, a cop and has been looking for a role like this to showcase her strengths. For all of us who grew up watching great crime shows like CID, Crime Patrol etc., this could be our fix. As for the Tamil audience, they seem to be excited to see Pooja back after four years. If you are wondering what she has been up to, the fact that she has six releases in Telugu next year is your clue.

On social media you see Pooja and her husband John working out together and competing in fitness challenges even on vacations. Yes, they are one of those couples. Their absolute adorableness on social media might just explain their camaraderie on the show. Pooja tells me that it might be serendipity that led to John’s and her screen-testing on the same day and bagging their roles. They even ended up on the same special task force team in the show. This way, their dates line up and this super busy couple gets to go to sets together.

The show is slowly but steadily picking up a fan base, as it takes someone with a strong constitution to be able to stomach a true crime show. Pooja tells me that some members of her family tried, but couldn’t handle some of it. Here’s hoping that this show gets renewed for its next season, as I for one, can’t wait to see Pooja kick some butt on screen every week.

Model shares her tale of turning daredevil for reality show
Sindhoori Chandramohan, a popular model and an aspiring actress in the city, is the winner of reality show Action Superstar on Jaya TV. The show, hosted by Ganesh Venkatraman, had several adventurous tasks based on the five elements in nature. The contestants did all their stunts themselves with little or no training. If this already sounds scary, wait till you read that Sindhoori had to jump through hoops of fire and do stunts worthy of a Rohit Shetty or Abbas-Mustan film.
The show began with Sindhoori as one of the 12 contestants and with each episode they had different tasks testing their physical fitness and mental fortitude. Sindhoori tells me that she has a new found appreciation for stunt performers and for action films. With each task came uncertainty and doubts as to whether she was capable of getting through, but gritting her teeth and pushing through those doubts resulted in her succeeding and eventually taking home the title. What set her apart from the other contestants was that potential failure didn’t seem to stop her from going ahead. Sindhoori tells me that she is quite eager for acting projects and now that she has the title of Jaya TV action superstar maybe she will be offered tough female roles that involve her performing stunts.
