People complain of extra chlorine in Metro Water

Residents of Varadharaja Perumal Koil Street in Tondiarpet have been complaining that the level of chlorine mixed in the water supplied by Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSS) has been high for more than a week. This has forced them to buy water from shops.

“The smell of chlorine in the water has been high for the last two weeks. It persists even after we boil it. We have complained to CMWSS more than five times, but there is no response from them. Every time we call, they promise they will visit the place to check the chlorine level, but are yet to act on it,” said Kasinathan V, a resident of Varadharaja Perumal Koil Street.

Locals claimed that after consuming Metro Water, they have been facing health problems such as stomach pain and throat infection. A few children have also had fever and had to behospitalised after drinking the water.

“We have been suffering from water crisis since May, and we don’t have any option but to get water from Metro Water. The quality of water was good, but for past few days the chlorine level in it has been high,” said Nivas MV, another resident. “We pay Metro Water only Rs 10, but now we spend between Rs 80-Rs 100 on buying water cans. We want the officials to solve this problem immediately,” he added.

When contacted, a senior divisional official from CMWSS said, “As instructed we have added chlorine upto 5PPM, and not more than that, but we will check the quantity of the chlorine level immediately.”
