Customs officials seized 4kg gold worth Rs 1.56 core and arrested a Korean national, on Thursday.

Based on intelligence that gold is likely to be smuggled by Korean passengers arriving from Hong Kong, a specialteam of officers were on the vigil and nabbed the smuggler.


The officers noticed a tall and well-built male passenger walking in a suspicions manner towards the exit on Thursday morning and intercepted him for questioning. The accused, identified as Chang Sic Ban (36) is a residentof Seoul, Republic of Korea. When the officers asked him to remove his shoes, the man became visibly tense.


The Customs checked inside his shoes and four gold bars weighing 1 Kg each were found concealed by wrappingin newspapers. The gold worth Rs 1.56 crores was seized and the officersarrested him.


During questioning, Chang said that he was a graduate in Architecture and was working as a fitness trainer since it was his passion. He said that the gold was handed over to him by an unknown person outside Hong Kong airport. He was supposed to hand over the gold to another person in the city who would identify Chang by his picture.
