Blogger encourages teens to take up writing
For the Chennai-based parenting blogger Antara Pandit, writing has always been therapeutic.
Chennai
After becoming a mother, writing became a way for her to deal with the transition to parenthood. She started a blog called The Bubbly Blogcast, a platform that supports mothers, who are experiencing the ups and downs of motherhood. After realising the power of writing, she has come up with a new section on her blog called Teens Talk, a platform for writing and self-expression for kids of all age groups.
What was the core reason behind encouraging kids to take up writing as an activity/means of self-expression?
After starting the blog, I realised that I was good at putting words down on paper and cleanse my mind. It became a means of self-expression for me. It is extremely beneficial for every individual to open up and share their voice, thoughts, fears and for those who are unable to express themselves verbally, can do so through so many other mediums, including writing. Letting feelings fester within more often than not sees long term negative impacts so working on self-expression, to me, is crucial. This applies to kids as much as it does to adults.
How writing can help in their betterment?
Kids today are being plagued with issues that probably did not even exist when our parents were raising us. Let’s take bullying as an example. It is rampant today and as mothers, our immediate reaction is to protect our kids and help them deal with it. But do we ever stop to think about how we can prevent this from happening in the first place? My belief has always been that kids or even adults who possess that need to bully and treat others as weak, probably have built up detrimental emotions which have not been dealt with. I see writing as a way for kids as young as 6 and 7 years to start talking about what is important to them, what their beliefs are, what their needs are and so on. This will help in a healthy emotional development.
How are you planning to propagate this idea among children and parents?
Teens Talk, a new initiative by The Bubbly Blogcast, is a platform for writing and self-expression for kids of all ages. When I talk about this to other parents, I always make sure I tell them one thing — right now it is not about structuring perfect sentences with zero spelling errors and nearly perfect grammar. That would be quite strange considering kids are supposed to be the authors. Every parent wants to know what is going on in their child’s head and writing for Teens Talk is a fantastic way of doing this.
