    Salem man drowns in sea off Marina

    A 20-year-old man hailing from Salem drowned in the sea off Marina beach on Sunday evening. The deceased, identified as P Naveen, moved to the city a week ago to work at a mobile phone service centre, the police said.

    He and his friends reached Marina beach on Sunday and while they were swimming in the sea, Naveen was pulled in by a giant wave. His friends’ effort to rescue him were in vain, but they immediately alerted the Anna Square police station. However, his lifeless body was washed ashore before the police personnel arrived at the spot. His body was sent to Omandurar Government Hospital for post-mortem examination. The Marina police registered a case and informed Naveen’s parents. Meanwhile, an unidentified body washed ashore near Kasimedu fishing harbour on Monday morning. On information, the police retrieved the body and sent it to Government Stanley Hospital for post-mortem examination. An inquiry is on to identify the deceased man.
