RGGGH to launch treatment protocol for Parkinson’s disease
Doctors from King’s College Hospital, London, will train doctors at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) to treat patients with Parkinson’s disease and release a treatment protocol. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to this effect was signed between the State Health Department and representatives from London.
Chennai
Health Minister C Vijaya Baskar and Secretary Beela Rajesh, on Friday, met the team of neurologists from the King’s College Hospital to decide the treatment protocol for Parkinson’s disease in the city.
Parkinson’s disease is a disorder of the central nervous system that affects the movement of an individual. There are various symptoms, including tremors in the hands, followed by stiffness, slow movement and loss of balance.
The treatment protocol, which will include a specific drug mechanism for Parkinson’s disease, will be launched in January next year at RGGGH. The hospital authorities said that training of neurologists will help them chart out treatment to be given to patients.
The treatment to be launched at RGGGH is based on the procedure that has been followed by the doctors at King’s College for more than fifteen years. Health Minister said that it was the first level meeting with the representatives of King’s College and the training will begin next year.
The Tamil Nadu government had earlier held talks with Kings College Hospital to set up its branch in the State when Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami visited the UK in September. An MoU was also signed between the representatives of both the parties.
