The deceased were identified as S Dinesh (17), a Class 12 student in Selaiyur government school and Prasanth (19), a college dropout from Ananthapuram in Selaiyur. Janarthanan (17), classmate and neighbour of Dinesh, was injured in the accident. The police said that they recovered a ganja packet from Prasanth’s pocket.
On Thursday evening, when Dinesh and Janarthanan were returning from school, Prasanth picked them up on his two-wheeler. They were riding triples towards Camp Road.
When they were travelling on Agramthen Road, Prasanth tried to overtake a private school bus. But he lost control of the vehicle when a cow suddenly came in front. In the impact, all three of them fell down, and the rear wheels of the bus ran over Dinesh and Prasanth.
The Selaiyur police and Chromepet traffic investigation police who arrived at the spot found that Dinesh and Prasanth have died on the spot. Janarthanan was rushed to a nearby private hospital, from where he was referred to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital. His condition remain critical, said the police.
When the police checked the bodies of the deceased, they recovered ganja packets from Prasanth’s pocket. The police suspect that he could have been high on drugs while riding the bike.
The bus driver, Ezhumalai (40), who escaped from the spot, later surrendered at the Selaiyur police station. He was handed over to the Chromepet traffic investigation police.
