Kasimedu fisherwomen stage stir against inspector’s transfer

The visual of women surrounding the officer and asking him to remain in Kasimedu went viral from Tuesday morning. But a senior officer said there was neither any plan nor any demand from the public to retain the inspector in Kasimedu station.

A native of Sivaganga, Murugesan is a 1997 batch sub-inspector, who has been posted in Chennai since 2014. He has served in stations, including Vepery and Tiruvottiyur. He has been in Kasimedu station since February before being transferred to Ambattur as per an order dated November 6.

Though senior officers say they are not sure how he became so popular among the people in such a short time, for the people within his jurisdiction, Murugesan was always accessible through his mobile phone and helped the fisherwomen by advising their husbands to stop drinking, at least in the morning. He had also discussed with Tasmac officials to close a liquor shop, another initiative appreciated by the fisherwomen.

On Monday evening, Murugesan had trouble in controlling and consoling crowd, especially women, who squatted on the road. He eventually pacified and sent them home.
