Corpn receives ‘innovation’ award for smart city projects
The Greater Chennai Corporation has received ‘Social Innovation for Accelerating Transition to Sustainable Cities’ Award for effectively implementing smart city projects in the city.

According to a press release, M Govinda Rao, managing director of Chennai Smart City Limited, Deputy commissioner of Chennai corporation and other officials received the award at an event held in New Delhi.
“Greater Chennai Corporation and Chennai Smart City Limited were recognised for incorporating the best features of digital transformation for four projects, namely, Namma Chennai app, Solar Rooftop, Cycle Sharing System and 28 Smart Class,” the release mentioned.
The event was organised by Governance Now, in which several awards under different categories were distributed to other cities in India.
A Chennai Corporation official said that the Namma Chennai App was launched in January 2018 as grievance redressal app and has now expanded to provide services of birth and death certificates and also to pay taxes.
On asking about smart classes, he said, “Currently smart classes are set in 28 Corporation schools and after the move, students’ attendance and pass percentage has increased in those schools.”
As of now, the civic body operates as many as 500 bicycles in 50 locations under the cycle-sharing system. “We are also generating 3.064 MW of power, which is 13 per cent of our consumption, using solar energy,” the official explained.
