    Tomato, onion prices soar at Koyambedu

    Chennai: Prices of tomatoes and onions have soared to Rs 40 per kg after a month at Koyambedu wholesale market due to shortage of supply. Vendors said that the prices of other vegetables have also increased.

    P Sukumaran, secretary of Vegetable, Flower and Fruits Merchants Association, said, “Onion season starts from December and the recent rainfall is one of the reasons for the shortage of supply. We have been receiving 20 truckloads of onion against its usual supply of 40 truck daily. From next month, the supply is expected to increase and the prices might come down by up to 15 per cent.” “The prices of tomatoes have also increased in the market on Sunday due to decreased supply. Price of other vegetables, except carrot, have also increased. Carrot was sold at Rs 65-75 per kg but its price decreased to Rs 40-45 niw. Broad beans is sold at Rs 30-35, and beans Rs 45 per kg,” he added.

    Flower vendors, too, saw a fall in the prices after a week of muhurtham days. “The prices might go up by 10 per cent from next week. Currently, jasmine is sold for Rs 450 per kg, jasmine sambac at Rs 360 per kg, crossandra at Rs 120- 150, rose at Rs 80- 100 and damask rose at Rs 70-80,” said S Mookaiah, Secretary, Koyambedu Malar Podhu Vyabarigal Sangam.
