Hate speech detection among projects developed by IIT-M students
Hate speech detection, autonomous driving in a simulated environment and text-braille convertor were some of the projects among the cutting-edge innovations and technologies demonstrated by the IIT-M students at Centre for Innovation (CFI) Open House-2019 that was held on Saturday.
Chennai
A release from IIT-Madras said that hate speech detection is about extracting data from popular social media sites and performing sentiment and statistical analysis to obtain the overall sentiment and temperament regarding a particular keyword or tweet and further enhancing the solution with hate speech detection.
The objective of the autonomous driving in a simulated environment was to train an agent (a car) to navigate through complex traffic scenarios, including dealing with crossings without signals, random pedestrians, slow moving cars and traffic rule violators.
“The images are first segmented to extract information on the lanes, signals and other cars along with in-depth information,” it said.
Following this, control algorithms were used to maintain the cars position in the lane, identify intersections and perform lane changes.
About Text-to Braille Converter, the release said around 285 million people worldwide were visually impaired or sighted. Existing digital Braille reading devices are bulky and expensive and only five per cent of visually impaired people own them. Also, only three per cent of all text content is available in Braille. The major impetus of this CFI project was to provide a viable solution for these hitches and to improve and to economize the existing solutions. The team has engineered a portable Text-to-Braille Interactive Device.
This apart, several teams and clubs that have won international acclaim demonstrated Formula cars, drones and next-generation technologies such as ‘Hyperloop.’
