The arrested was identified as Balu, a private firm employee. The police said Balu murdered his cousin Meena on Tuesday morning when she was alone in the house. Balu’s mother Divya was taking care of her brother’s daughter Meena after her parents passed away.

The police said that Divya was living in her deceased brother’s house in Adambakkam. After his marriage, Balu had been asking Divya to transfer the house to his name. However, she refused staying that the house belonged to Meena.

During the inquiry, Balu said told the police that he decided to kill Meena to take over the property. On Tuesday morning, he had entered the house and attacked Meena with a knife. The girl, who suffered multiple cut injuries, died on the spot. Balu denied raping Meena and added that his intention was only to kill Meena to ensure he gets the property.

Balu was remanded in judicial custody and the police said that Meena’s body has been sent to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital to examine whether she was raped before death.
