According to a Chennai Corporation official, a Rs 2,000 crore project was announced in the State Assembly and the field level engineers were instructed to identify suitable locations to construct the parking facilities.

“We have identified as many as 101 locations to build multi-level parking facilities. Of the 101 locations, we have finalised 35 locations, in which multi-modal structures will be constructed. The buildings, besides having parking space, will also have spaces for commercial activities,” the official said.

The official added that the 35 finalised locations would include Kodambakkam and Shenoy Nagar nearAnna Nagar.

Apart from the multi-modal parking facilities under the integrated parking management system project, the civic body is constructing a multi-level parking space in T Nagar under Smart City Mission. Another multi-level parking facility is on the anvil at Mahatma Gandhi Road in Nungambakkam.

“Once the multi-modal parking facilities are constructed, parking charges will be collected from vehicle owners. Revenue will also be earned from renting out the commercial spaces,” the official explained.

Earlier, the civic body had identified lands belonging to Chennai Corporation, Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA), Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department and other government departments.

“However, all the finalised 35 locations are owned by the Chennai Corporation,” he said.

Meanwhile, State Chief Secretary had directed the civic body to build a parking facility near Velachery railway station interlinking the railway station and bus stand.
