Wholesale flower market in Koyambedu may soon be expanded as the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has decided to conduct a feasibility study on it.

According to a CMDA official, the flower market is likely to be extended on the eastern side by around three acres.
“In July, deputy Chief Minister had announced the expansion of the flower market during the Assembly session. We will appoint a consultant to prepare a feasibility report and a detailed project report (DPR),” the official said.
He added that the consultant would also study ways to integrate the new facility with existing flower market, other markets in Koyambedu market premises and future developments within the vicinity.
Presently, the flower market has as many as 473 wholesale flower shops, of which three shops are lying vacant. The existing flower market functions on 27,052 square feet while the Koyambedu wholesale market works on 11.25 lakh square feet of land.
The CMDA is set to identify organised flower trade occurring in other parts of the city and examine the possibility of shifting them to the expanded flower market. “Based on the number of new wholesale and retail shops, CMDA will set up cold storage, weighbridge, parking facilities and others,” the official said.
