An autorickshaw driver and his friend were nabbed on Thursday for robbing a woman passenger who had hired his vehicle on Monday night.
Chennai
The accused were identified as J Aasif Basha (27) of Tiruvottiyur and V Kishore (20). The duo threatened Sindhuja of Tiruvottiyur at knifepoint and robbed her of 10 sovereign jewels, a mobile phone and Rs 7,000 in cash.
In her complaint, Sindhuja, a dancer, said that she hired an autorickshaw from Poojammal Street off Ennore Expressway to reach her relative’s house. When the vehicle was crossing Kakkanji Nagar junction, she saw a man waving his hand to stop it.
The driver stopped autorickshaw near the man and he immediately forced himself into the vehicle. Even as she was confused about the happenings, the man pulled out a knife and threatened her to hand over all the valuables in her possession to him.
As she refused to do so, he pulled her earrings, nose pin, anklet and Rs 7,000 she had in her bag. When she tried to call for help through her phone, they snatched it as well. Panicked over this, she jumped off of the vehicle to escape from the duo. They immediately sped away from the spot, she mentioned in her complaint. Other motorists, who were passing by, noticed the woman lying injured and rushed her to the Government Stanley Medical College Hospital.
The accused were remanded in judicial custody.
