This move by the Higher Education Department comes in the backdrop of increasing demand for new courses that would suit the demand from industries that employ the young graduates. Also, a senior official from the Directorate of Collegiate Education told DT Next, the department has received requests and feedbacks from academicians and parents to start new courses.
“In all, 81 courses will be introduced this year, including 50 in UG level and the remaining 31 for PG students,” he said.
“New technical courses that are required to meet the demand from the industry, like mobile applications and IT-related subjects, will be useful for science students to get employed quickly,” he said. For arts students, new courses in history, social science and in auditing would be introduced.
Pointing out that the introduction of new courses would also increase the intake of the students in the colleges, the official said the institutions where the new courses would be offered would get about 100 professors to take classes for these courses.
The official said that at present, the curriculum committee, comprising experts, former college principals and academicians, were involved in preparing the syllabus. “The textbooks for the new courses will be printed before January 2020,” he said.
At present, 301 government and government-aided colleges are functioning across the State, the official said, adding that the colleges would be instructed to allocate additional classrooms for students, who would be admitted to pursue these new courses.
He pointed out that in the last five years, more than 150 new courses were introduced at government colleges, which benefited thousands of students. “The government is also planning to introduce 50 new courses for polytechnic students from the next academic year,” he said.
