TWAD, local body get notice over shoddy maintenance of drains
The Madras High Court has issued a notice to the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Sewerage Board (TWAD) and the local administration for failing to maintain drains in Mayiladuthurai.
Chennai
A division bench comprising Justice M Sathyanarayanan and Justice N Seshasayee issued the notice returnable by November 5 based on a plea moved by an ex-MLA and president of General Labour Organisation.
According to the petitioner, it was TWAD that originally constructed and maintained the drains. Later, it was to the local body for maintenance. But owing to lack of maintenance, the drains are overflowing, leading to serious health hazards, including the recent outbreak of dengue, he alleged.
The counsel appearing for the petitioner submitted that despite repeated representations in this regard, the officials have shown a lack of sensitivity and hence the petitioner was forced to approach the court.
However, while recording the submission, the bench said that despite being a former MLA, the petitioner has not approached the local elected representative. Despite the pendency of the writ petition, it was open to the petitioner to submit a detailed representation to the local representative (MLA) for the redressal of his grievances, the bench added.
