Doc waylaying case: 2 juveniles among 5 held

The arrested persons were identified as drivers Soundararajan (27) and Ravi (19) from Kancheepuram, the latter’s brother Raja (18), and two 17-year-old boys from Chinna Kancheepuram. The incident happened on Sunday night when Dr Angeline Jessy (51) of Kancheepuram was returning home from the clinic on her car driven by Soundararajan. When they were nearing Kancheepuram, a gang of three intercepted their car on a two-wheeler and robbed the 24-sovereign ornaments that Angeline was wearing at knifepoint. Based on her complaint, the Kanchi Taluk police began investigation.

As it was late in the night by the time they headed home, Angeline had asked Soundararajan to go through the main road. But the driver refused and travelled through another route, which made the police suspicious. When they grilled Soundararajan intensely, he accepted that he along with another driver, Ravi, planned the robbery.

Police said Ravi is also working as a driver with Angeline, and would drive the car when Soundararajan was not working. After the two drivers planned to rob the doctor, Ravi sought the help of his brother Raja (18) and two of his friends.

According to the police, the gang was confident that Angeline could be threatened into not filing a complaint with the police. As they had calculated, Angeline initially hesitated to file a written complaint. However, after the police assured her safety, she lodged the complaint.

Raja is already facing a few theft cases, the police said. All were remanded in judicial custody.
