5-year-old first in Asia to undergo rare dental surgery

A five-year-old boy suffering from ectodermal dysplasia (ED) — who had no teeth in the lower jaw and just two in the upper jaw — underwent a dental implant treatment at a city hospital. He is the youngest patient to be treated for this condition in Asia.

ED are a group of disorders in which either the skin, sweat glands, hair, nails, teeth and mucous membranes develop abnormally. The patient, Samaksh Jain, is from Rajasthan and has a developmental condition. He was given a set of dentures to wear by local doctors in his state, but it failed to resolve his problem.

Across the world, the only way to help such patients is to use titanium dental implants in the lower jaw to anchor the lower denture and hold it firm. The medical experts at Rajan Dental Care headed by Dr Gunaselan Rajan, the medical director of Rajan Dental along with Dr Srinivasan, Dr Savanna Kumar and their team successfully performed this rare implant surgery on the boy.

Having received this advanced dental implant treatment Samaksh is now Asia’s youngest patient treated with a dental implant. “The doctors used two advance dental implants made of an alloy of titanium and zirconia and placed it in Samaksh’s lower jaw under general anesthesia. After the healing period, the denture was anchored to these implants and thus made stable,” said Dr Ranjan. “Less than 10 patients have been treated worldwide at the five or younger,”he added.
