The project was initiated in June 2018 and the whole stretch of the plaza is 1.4 Km. As per the scheme, the pedestrian plaza is a footpath in the central commercial area where precedence is given to non-motorised transport – first for pedestrians and then for cycling.

Previously, the footpath was very narrow and damaged, coupled with issues like lack of adequate number of garbage bins and streetlight. “Pondy Bazaar is a big commercial area where public safety is crucial. Now, it has been developed into a modern walkway as you find in foreign countries. In the pedestrian plaza, we have provided planters around the trees, new native trees, and shrubs and new pedestrian lightings. Bollards have also been installed to prevent vehicles from encroaching the pedestrian plaza,” said Raj Cherubal, director (projects), Chennai City Connect.

He added that the major work undertaken is beneath the plaza, where there is a separate spot formed for storm water drains and electricity cables. So, in future, if there is any maintenance work to be done, they do not have to dig the pedestrian plaza.
