According to officials of the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), the daily ridership touched 1.03 lakh, which is much higher than the usual weekend footfall.

On Friday, CMRL has witnessed a surge in the passenger flow with a total of 1.37 lakh passengers travelling in the trains. This is the highest passenger count this October.

With the traffic on the GST road blocked to enable the convoy of Chinese President Xi Jinping to reach the airport from the hotel in Guindy, there was apprehension among the public of traffic coming to halt on Saturday as well.

An official from the Metro Rail said that the stations between Little Mount to Airport witnessed increased footfall on Friday and Saturday. “Fearing the heavy traffic, many people opted to travel in the Metro Rail to reach their destination without getting caught in the traffic snarl,” the official said.
