Chromepet residents fear health hazards as pigs create menace
The residents in and around Hasthinapuram and Nemilichery in Chromepet are concerned about the pig menace that has hit the neighbourhood, fearing that they would face health risks due to this.

The people here say pigs moving in groups create a lot of inconvenience for them. These are mostly seen on Nemilichery-Nanmangalam Road, which is already a mess due to the huge pile of garbage, rue residents.
“Travelling through this road requires extra caution as the stretch is narrow and filled with garbage. The place already stinks, and the presence of pigs further increases the hygiene concerns. It is very dangerous for motorists who might hit the animals by accident. We have given complaints to the municipal office, but they have not taken any action,” said Murugavel K, a resident of Chromepet.
Kaviya Krishnan, a college student from the area, said it was scary to see pigs roam freely in a residential area like this. “Every day, on our way back home, we are always on a lookout to ensure that we don’t come in contact with them. Sometimes, the streetlights don’t work in the night. So, we cannot walk alone on the road,” she said.
Speaking to DT Next, a Pallavaram Municipality official said, “We have not received any complaints. The pigs are owned by people in a slum area nearby. After inspecting the area, we will give a warning to them to keep the pigs near their place. If they do not follow the instruction, we will remove the pigs from the locality.”
