Chennai records highest number of dengue cases in Tamil Nadu

According to the data released by the National Vector Borne Diseases Control Programme and National Health Mission at a conference in New Delhi, Tamil Nadu constituted at least five per cent of the dengue incidence with 50,903 cases reported till September 29.

Karnataka had the highest incidence with 23 per cent while Telangana accounted for 15 per cent of the total cases. Maharashtra and Uttarakhand witnessed 12 per cent and 11 per cent respectively. Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala also reported at least 5 per cent of the total cases in the country.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, Health Secretary Beela Rajesh inspected the Communicable Diseases Hospital in Tondiarpet and interacted with the patients at the hospital. She assured that the State has adequate number of doctors and medications to manage the dengue cases.

“There have been three deaths due to dengue in the State, one each in Tiruvallur, Chennai and Tirupur. There are about 3,000 cases reported in Tamil Nadu. Chennai has the highest number of cases of dengue cases with about 100 people undergoing treatment. Majority of the cases were from North Chennai,” said the official.

When asked about the shortage of beds in government hospitals due to large number of fever cases, she said she did not come across such a situation during inspections. “If there is any such issue, the beds will be increased and all the facilities. There is adequate fund for arranging all the facilities for the dengue patients. The funds are being allotted by the department based on the requirement,” saidBeela Rajesh.
