    On Vijayadasami day, which is considered auspicious for starting to learn, more than 250 children were enrolled in kindergarten and primary schools run by the Greater Chennai Corporation.

    According to a Corporation official, a special ceremony was organised in as many as 119 kindergarten schools and 91 primary schools on Tuesday. “These events are conducted following an instruction of our deputy commissioner to encourage parents to enrol their children in Chennai Corporation schools. More than 250 children joined our schools,” the official said. Usually, the school admission would be conducted from June and the admission would be closed in August. “We have been admitting new students to our schools for past few years to increase our strength,” he added.


    Presently, the Greater Chennai Corporation maintains as many as 281 schools, in which more than 80,000 students are studying. Meanwhile, as many as 12 students were admitted in Model School in Egmore. A parent, who brought her son to enrol in school said, “I had waited for Vijayadasami to admit my son in school. Children were made to write Tamil alphabets on their first day.”


    Explaining other measures to be taken to increase the admission during the next academic year, the official said that the civic body has constituted three committees to study and changes to be brought in the Chennai Corporation schools. Also, the civic body has earmarked Rs 200 Crore to renovate damaged buildings and upkeep school campuses. It is learned the officials have proposed to paint the school buildings in uniform colour apart from installing entrance gates and name boards in a similar pattern.
