Over 50 ‘model’ govt schools across State soon

In a bid to improve enrolment, the Directorate of School Education has planned to transform more than 50 government schools into model schools in the State. While a few model schools are currently functioning in some districts, each district will have at least two model schools once the plan is implemented, said sources.

A senior official from the Directorate of School Education said that the infrastructure in the selected schools will be improved on par with the private institutions. Stating that the government has planned to set up at least two model schools in each district, he said, “It was envisaged that these schools would be the first to introduce any innovative scheme and other schools would learn from the experience and follow those initiatives across the districts.”

“A high-level committee has been constituted to frame guidelines, monitor the expenditure and functioning of these model schools,” he said and added, “Model schools function as composite schools having classes from LKG to Class 12.”

According to the official, the model schools will be provided with smart class rooms, hi-tech labs, solar lights, biometric attendance system, e-library, sports articles, protected drinking water, CCTV cameras and other facilities.

The official said that painting work will also be undertaken to give a fresh look to the school. He added that saplings will be planted around the school to create the awareness about the environment among the students.

“It was noticed that the head masters of the selected school have also mobilised funds from other sources such as Corporate Social Responsibility, public, alumni and government schemes,” he pointed out and added that Rs 50 lakh will be allocated to each school.
