Preliminary investigations revealed that the marriage halls were the accused’s ‘go-to spot’ for robbery.
The accused was identified as V Purushothaman of Guduvanchery. On September 2, Purushothaman escaped with a four-sovereign gold chain of Navdisha, daughter of Sasikumar from New Washermanpet, who works in the police control room, from a wedding hall in Vadapalani while they were attending a marriage ceremony.

The police registered a case and combed the CCTV footage retrieved from the locality. They zeroed in on the suspect who was found carrying the child and circulated his image to all police stations. Meanwhile, the Puducherry police informed the city police that his name was Purushothaman, a history-sheeter with cases pending against him.

After an extensive search, Purushothaman was secured from his hometown in Villupuram district and remanded in judicial custody on Wednesday. The police have recovered 17 sovereigns and Rs 2 lakh fromhis possession.

After interrogation, the police said that Purushothaman carried out at least four similar robberies in Vadapalani itself. Explaining his modus operandi, the police said, “He will visit wedding halls like a guest and rob jewels from minors.” Purushothaman is said to have robbed jewels in Tambaram and Saidapet as well, and was staying in a rented house at Guduvanchery.
